The Atlas Mountains don't have a bad season — they have the wrong season for the wrong person. I've guided treks here in snowstorms in January and summer heat at dawn in August. Every season offers something completely different. The question is what you're looking for.

If you want lush green valleys with snow-capped peaks behind them, you want April or May. If you want solitude, crisp air, and the feeling of having the mountain entirely to yourself, come in October. If you're planning a Toubkal summit, July–August or May–June gives you the safest window.

When is the absolute best month to visit the Atlas Mountains?

May and October are consistently the best single months. May offers the most dramatic scenery — green valleys, snow-capped peaks, wildflowers — while October gives you the clearest skies and quietest trails after the summer rush.

Can you trek in the Atlas Mountains in winter?

Yes, but only with preparation. Below 1,800m the trails are walkable and beautiful in snow. Above 2,000m — including the Tasghimout summit and Toubkal — you need crampons, ice axe, and prior high-altitude winter experience. Hamid guides winter expeditions for properly equipped clients.

Is July or August too hot for hiking?

Not if you start early. Departing Imlil at 6:30am and reaching altitude by 9am avoids the worst heat on lower trails. Above 2,200m the temperature is comfortable even in summer. The Toubkal summit is actually at its most accessible in July–August.

What's the weather like at the Tasghimout summit?

Expect temperatures 8–12°C cooler at the 2,700m summit than at the Imlil trailhead. On an April day when Imlil is 18°C, the summit will feel like 8–10°C with wind chill. Always bring a warm layer regardless of the season.

Does it rain a lot in the Atlas Mountains?

The Atlas Mountains receive most rainfall in winter and early spring (January–March). April sees occasional afternoon showers but is mostly dry. Summer is almost entirely dry. Autumn is reliably dry and clear — one reason October/November are so popular with experienced trekkers.
